“If people aren’t taught the language of sound and images, shouldn’t they be considered as illiterate as if they left college without being able to read and write?”

---George Lucas on visual literacy in an Edutopia interview with James Daley

IVLA Definition of VL

Welcome!

Welcome to our site, which provides examples of course design, activities, and student work in visual literacy. The "VL Course" tab provides examples from a graduate-level visual literacy course. The course was designed as a visual metaphor of an expedition. The sub-menus provide sample assignments and student work. The "Workshops" tab includes some recent workshop materials from our work with educators in various venues from traditional classrooms to museums.
Our site is still under construction, but we welcome discussion. Please use the "Contact" tab to leave a comment. We are planning a blog page, where these discussions can take place.
